After his success with New Edition, producer Maurice Starr decided to replicate the group, substituting suburban white kids for the young black teenagers. The result was New Kids on the Block, which quickly eclipsed the popularity of Starr's previous group. Comprising Boston-area singers Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, Jon Knight, Danny Wood, and Joe McIntyre, the New Kids were awkward and enthusiastic on their 1986 debut, which wasn't surprising considering that the oldest members were barely 16 years old. With their next album, 1988's Hangin' Tough, the group's image had toughened up and they had the material to support it. From the saccharine ballad "I'll Be Loving You Forever" to the title track's stab at funk, the band had a seemingly endless streak of hits in 1988 and 1989; their Christmas album even went double platinum. New Kid mania continued with 1990's Step by Step; even if it sold five million copies less than Hangin' Tough, it still sold three million copies. But that was the end of the road for their short time in the sun -- they were the subject of an endless amount of jokes and were getting no respect. Besides, their audience was growing up. In 1994, they returned with the Starr-less Face the Music, which actually showed a remarkable musical maturity -- they were a credible urban R&B outfit -- but hardly sold anything, even if they were packing theaters on tour. In June of 1994, the band announced that it had acrimoniously parted ways and all of the members were now pursuing solo careers.

In 1999, MTV attempted to reunite the group and get them to perform on that year's VMAs. All of the members were on board for the project, except Jonathan Knight. Consequently, the performance didn't happen.

In 2004, Aamer Haleem, host of VH1's Bands Reunited, also attempted to coerce each of the members of New Kids on the Block to reunite for a one-night performance for the show. This time Jonathan Knight agreed, as did Jordan Knight. However, Joe McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, and Danny Wood all declined. While Wood and Wahlberg declined on-camera interviews, McIntyre cited that the only way he would perform with the band was if the group would make the decision to reunite permanently.

On April 3, 2008, Donnie Wahlberg told CNN that the band had reunited, and were recording an album of new material, and was planning to tour. The producer RedOne previewed several tracks for a Boston Globe interviewer later that month; some of the song titles on the new album include "Click Click Click", "Close to You", "Looking Like Danger", "Big Boy/Big Girl" featuring Lady GaGa, and "Summertime".

In May 2008, the group released "Summertime", as a downloadable single on various online digital music services. They also posted the tune on their MySpace page. The new album, according to Billboard magazine, was not expected until the fall. The song immediately turned up on several radio stations, including WXKS-FM (Kiss 108) in their home city of Boston, Massachusetts. It received 114 spins across two formats (CHR/Pop and Hot AC) in its first day. A music video for "Summertime" was shot on May 9, 2008.

The group performed "Summertime" for the first time live on Today on May 16, 2008. They also appeared on May 17 and 18 at two annual showcases put on by local radio stations in the New York/New Jersey and Boston markets. (They shared the stage at both shows with their present-day equivalent, The Jonas Brothers.)
